KOREA University Redox Catalysis for Environmental Sustainability Lab

The ROCATES lab concentrates research efforts on exploring redox-reaction-based strategies for water treatment and air purification, fabricating advanced materials for heterogeneous environmental catalysis, and identifying the fundamental mechanisms underlying the reductive/oxidative degradation of gaseous and aquatic contaminants.

Specific research interests include: (1) developing homogeneous and heterogeneous processes for peroxide and ozone activation and probing the mechanisms behind the production of radical and non-radical oxidants; (2) designing the visible-light-responsive systems based on new photosensitizing and photocatalytic nanomaterials (e.g., fullerene and porphyrin derivatives, bismuth- and silver-based catalysts) and evaluating their capacity for oxidative degradation and disinfection; (3) exploring electrochemical and photo-electrochemical oxidation processes for the treatment of industrial wastewaters; and (4) applying waste- and biomass-derived carbonaceous materials for advanced oxidation processes. The research activity requires the integration of knowledge from the multiple sectors of applied science and engineering (e.g., chemistry, material science, environmental engineering, and chemical engineering).

Collaboration with researchers from diverse research backgrounds is critical in achieving our current research goals: synthesizing innovative materials, analyzing and optimizing processes, and investigating the mechanisms in depth. Accordingly, we are always happy to hear from potential colleagues and students who take active interest in addressing environmental issues by an interdisciplinary approach.
